Abstract:
The reading of the Bucolics proposed by Servius and the exegesis of the late antique schools depends on a misreading of the Bucolics themselves, interpreted as a work reflecting the biographical events of its author. This exegesis, unknown to Virgil's contemporaries, began to take hold in the Neronian age, when it became convenient to identify Virgil's work and Virgil himself through his characters.
