Abstract:
The essay proposes a reading of the canzone Rfv 207 (Ben mi credea passar mio tempo omai), from a macrotextual perspective aimed at identifying the overall function and meaning of the poem within the Petrarch's Canzoniere. The work recognizes, as main themes of the canzone, the theft perpetrated against the beloved woman and the subsequent attempt of justification made by the poet, characterized by a specific judicial rhetoric already explored in the adjacent canzone, Rvf 206 through the genre of the escondit. The considerable increase of references to provencąl poetry in the passage from the "codice degli abbozzi" to the Vat. Lat 3195 is here considered a decisive factor in the composition of the poem thus contextualized in a section of the collection demostrating strong interest in connections with the provencąl tradition.
