Abstract:
Luigi Cremona is well known as one of the principal Italian mathematicians of the second half of the 19th century and as the founder of the Italian school of Algebraic Geometry. In this paper, using his large correspondence, we trait other sides of his personality and his political and civil role (Cremona was also a member and vice-president of Italian senate). In particular, we will examine his relations with the Cairoli family (principally with Benedetto and his mother Adelaide), with Giosuè Carducci and Francesco Magni on the masonry, with Eugenio Beltrami on the problem of the "Bologna''s professors" and the evolution of his political stands after his move to Rome.
This paper is divided in two parts. In this first part we speak mainly of the period in which Cremona worked in Bologna.
