Abstract:
This chapter discusses the discursive aspect of tax evasion in classical Athens by analysing rhetoric attacks on presumed tax evaders and reconstructing plausible arguments of defence in court speeches. It adopts a broad perspective on taxes, referring both to war taxes (eisphorai) and to liturgies (not taxes in a strict sense, but rather performances of financial tasks).
