Abstract:
Father Leone Nani, born on September 20, 1880 in Albino in the province of Bergamo (Italy), left for China in 1903 as a missionary for the apostolic vicariate of southern Shaanxi, an internal province of China, and precisely in Hanzhong 汉中, located in the mountainous south-west area of the province, the furthest of the missions of the Pontifical Seminary.
From his school reports he seems to have a strong inclination for scientific subjects and this is very important to understand his ability as a photographer, the last great photographer of Imperial China. Using a mobile studio, Nani immortalized, in the ten years of permanence, the China, right in the period of transition between empire and republic: landscapes, people, moments of life and hard work, discovering and making known social realities and cultural activities hard to reach by other Westerners.
His works, 640 plates, are kept in the PIME archive.
