DADA & THE REVOLUTION -- International Dada Lectures 26th September 2019 - 27th September 2019
Public Engagement Ciclo di conferenze The Weimar Republic was the product of a constitutional revolution, not of a social one. Indeed, the establishment of Germany’s parliamentary democracy involved the hasty termination of the November Revolution (1918-1919) and the brutal suppression of lingering revolutionaries. Dada took the place of Spartacus, continuing its failing revolutionary project with pseudopolitical actions. In early March 1919, Hausmann and Baader decided to proclaim that a “Dada Republic of Berlin-Nikolassee” would be formed on April 1, 1919. Adopting revolutionary rhetoric, the Dadasoph Hausmann launched a critique of Weimar politics and of German history. The anniversary of the German Revolution is an occasion to consider anew the Dada revolution, its significance and topicality, compared to the Bolsheviks’ seizure of power after October, 1917, the events of one hundred years ago in Berlin, Trotsky’s permanent revolution, and Vaneigem’s 1967 treatise on the revolution of everyday life.
