Abstract:
A philosophical micro-climate developed between Augustan and Tiberian Age in Rome and Seneca himself was in touch with such committed philosophers in his youth (the School of Sextii, Papirius Fabianus, Sotion and Attalus). Many years later, Seneca left a vivid, heartfelt portrait of those teachers in Letter 108 to Lucilius; in so doing, he distinctly focused on Tiberian stretch of ‘Roman’ Philosophy. Hence, Letter 108 may play an important role in highlighting that intellectual milieu as well as its crucial, though underestimated contribution to the self-construction of the philosophia togata as a whole.
