Abstract:
This study was conducted to assess the biochemical changes in anaesthetized dogs following the administration of non-ionic-iodinated contrast (NIC) and gadolinum-based contrast (GBC) media. 35 dogs were allocated into 3 groups. The NIC and control (CTR) groups included 12 dogs each, whereas the GBC group included 11 dogs. Blood samples were collected before anaesthesia (S1, baseline), during anaesthesia and before contrast media administration (S2), 15 min after (S3) and 72 h after contrast media administration. A significant decrease in total protein and albumin concentrations was observed at S2 in all groups and at S3 in the CTR and NIC groups. A significantly lower urea concentration was observed in the NIC group compared to the CTR group. Potassium significantly decreased in all groups over time. Phosphate significantly increased in all groups at S2 and S3 and remained significantly higher at S4 in the CTR group. A similar reduction in serum calcium levels at S3 was observed for all groups, but it was significant only for the NIC group. Calcium concentrations were very low and significantly different in the CTR group compared to the GBC group at S3. Administration of contrast media in anaesthetized dogs did not induce clinically relevant changes in the serum concentrations of analytes that reflected renal function.
