Abstract:
Literature regarding strategic human resource management demonstrated the impact of specific HR practices on the firm performances. In the last years the stream of research has dealt with the topic of sustainability, exploring to what extent can the HR practices contribute to the achievement of not only the financial and economic objectives of the company, but also the sustainability of the business in the long run. This paper addresses this topic, merging literature on strategic human resource management and sustainability with the literature on stakeholder management, assuming that a sustainable company is the one that properly manages its stakeholders. The paper has the aim to highlight how much HR Managers consider their stakeholders relevant, and how much these stakeholders are included in the decisions regarding different HR practices. The findings of the paper, based on thirty structured interviews with HR Managers of big Italian companies, focuses on: the relevance that HR Managers attribute to ten typical stakeholders of the HR Department, and the inclusion degree of each stakeholder in the decision making processes regarding nine HR practices. The results have been discussed in a focus group with ten HR Mangers, which did not take part in the interviews. The paper discusses these findings, highlights their managerial implications and defines future tracks of research.
